He turns up in New Paducah with his sidekick Gruesome Moe, but luckily Sheriff Sam doesn’t recognize him, not just because he’s the kind of persona who is non grata under the Mayor’s gentrification scheme, but also because he has a price on his head.
There is, and we meet him in the second scene: Tricky Pete Porter, ‘the most dangerous man in the West’. Somewhere… somewhere there’s got to be a man who can tame my Rowdy Kate!’
‘If she ever, ever shows her face in this town again, she is to be tarred and feathered and ridden out on a rail.’īig Bart ends the first scene disconsolate: She has gone too far this time: the Mayor declares her a common outlaw, to be rounded up, brought in and formally banished from New Paducah. Kate’s habit of shooting up the joint doesn’t fit in, and Big Bart’s offer to pay for the damage is refused. The Mayor is eager to make the place more genteel, which includes importing some schoolmarms and turning the Greasy Gulch Saloon into a soda bar. But Kate has her own agenda: ‘Until Kate gets hitched, nobody gets hitched.’īut the town of New Paducah, New Mexico, is a lot less tolerant of Kate’s rowdiness than Padua was in Shakespeare’s comedy. Big Bart Millionola has two daughters, the demure Blanche, whom many young men have their eyes on, and Rowdy Kate, whom they don’t.
The story isn’t exactly as we know it from the original. The play that commands our attention is also Shakespearean: Rowdy Kate, a Wild West version of The Taming of the Shrew written in the early 1970s for school performance the earliest known production was in November 1972. For instance, there are Cybernella and Belinda and the Beast from the familiar fairytales, and Roamin’ Jo and Juli from Shakespeare. In 1980, Claire Boiko published a collection of short musical plays for performance by young people, parodying well-known stories.
